The Lotus Europa is a sports car produced in England (Hethel) between 1966 and 1975. It was sold as a 2-door coupe with rear-wheel drive and the engine located in the rear center. The name was later revived in the Type 121 Europa S, a sports car based on the Lotus Elise, which was produced between 2006 and 2010.
It has a lightweight, steel backbone chassis and a fibreglass body. Initially the body was fully coupled to the chassis, but later switched to a bolted body to facilitate routine repairs. The car was available with Renault’s 1.5- and 1.6-litre I4 engines and Ford’s 1.6-litre I4 engine. These were mated to a 4-speed or 5-speed manual transmission. In total, more than 9,000 examples were produced.
