The BMW 2002 Turbo combined a compact body with a turbocharged engine and a striking, sporty appearance. Wide fenders, a deep front spoiler, and colored stripes immediately revealed that this was a special version of the 02 series.
The model was unveiled at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show. Its four-cylinder engine, equipped with a KKK turbocharger and Kugelfischer fuel injection, delivered approximately 170 horses. This small two-door car thus featured a combination that earned respect even among fans of more powerful sports cars.
A distinctive detail was the upside-down “2002 Turbo” lettering on the front spoiler, which could be read in the rearview mirror of the car in front. Along with the decals, it was one of the most provocative elements of its appearance.
The 1974 model shown here underwent a three-year restoration. It features a white “Chamonix” paint job, a black interior, sport seats, a sunroof, and Alpina wheels. The tire pressure gauge also catches the driver’s eye.
Today, the BMW 2002 Turbo appeals primarily because of how directly it embodies its purpose. Its compact size, distinctive body, and turbocharged engine create a unique combination that stands out even among much more expensive classic cars.
