The Ford Cortina is a large family car produced in Europe, Australia, South Africa and South Korea between 1962 and 1982 in five generations, as a replacement for the Consul. It was rear-wheel drive with the engine located in the front. It was the best-selling car in the United Kingdom in the 1970s.

The first generation was produced between 1962 and 1966 and sold as a 2- or 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon. The car was designed to be economical to buy, cheap to run and easy and cheap to produce in Britain. It was available with three versions of the I4 engine, a 1.2-litre, a 1.5-litre and a 1.6-litre. These were mated to a 4-speed manual or 3-speed aic transmission.
