The BMW E24 is the first generation of the 6-series grand tourers, which were produced in 1976-1989 in West Germany. They were sold as 2-door coupes with rear-wheel drive and the engine located in the front. The cars were powered by petrol engines and shared many parts with the fifth series of the E12 model range. In 1982, they were updated with parts from the fifth series E28 series. In total, more than 85,000 examples were produced.

The M635CSi was introduced to the public at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show . In 1987, an equivalent model for the North American market, designated the M6, was introduced. The car was powered by a 3.5-litre I6 engine with 285 hp (210 kW). The North American version was powered by a version with 256 hp (191 kW). A total of 5,855 examples were produced.
