This 2-door luxury car was produced from 1955-1963 and was first unveiled as a prototype at the 1954 New York Auto Show. A total of 25881 units were produced. It represented an attractive and more affordable alternative to the exclusive Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, sharing its basic styling, engineering, detailing and fully independent suspension. The car was sold as a soft-top convertible or with a removable hardtop. During the early years, the 190 SL was available as a sports-racer model. It was powered by a front-mounted 1.9-litre I4 engine producing 104 hp (77 kW), which was mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox.
