The Volkswagen Golf Mk I is the first generation of the small family car produced in between 1974 and 1983. It was sold as a 3 or 5 door hatchback, 2 door convertible and pickup with rear wheel drive and front mounted engine. It represented a shift from air-cooled to water-cooled engines.
The car was available with a range of petrol as well as diesel engines, from the 1.1-litre I4 with 50bhp (37kW) to the 1.8-litre I4 with 110bhp (82kW). Some engines were only available for certain countries. There was a choice of 4 or 5 speed manual and 3 speed aic transmissions depending on the year of manufacture.
