The Mercedes-Benz W180 is a luxury car produced in between 1954 and 1959. It was sold as a 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe and convertible. Initially, cars based on the W180 chassis were sold as the 220 a, later as the 220 S. A total of 84 645 examples of the W180 were produced.
In March 1956, the 220 a was replaced by the 220 S, which was almost identical externally but was powered by an upgraded version of the 2.2-litre I6 engine. The engine initially had a power output of 99 hp (74 kW), which was later increased to 105 hp (78 kW). The car had a new one-piece front bumper, but the most noticeable difference was the addition of a chrome strip along the front fenders and doors.
