The BMW Z1 is the first model of the Z range of roadsters produced in limited numbers in 1989-1991. Only 8,000 examples were produced in total. The car is unique with plastic body panels and vertically sliding doors. It is one of the first BMWs to use multi-link rear suspension.
The car was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in in 1987. It had a rear drive and engine located in the front. It was powered by a 2.5-litre I6 engine with 168 hp (125 kW), which was mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. In 1996, its successor, the Z3, went into series production.
