Bol prvým sériovým cestným Porsche s týmto usporiadaním, ktoré využívalo vodné chladenie a zároveň prvé Porsche ponúkané s konvenčnou plne automatickou prevodovkou.
Automobil bol poháňaný 2-litrovým alebo 2,5-litrovým motorom I4, pričom 2-litorvý motor bol dostupný aj vo verzii s turbodúchadlom. Motory boli napojené na 3-stupňovú automatickú alebo 4/5-stupňovú manuálnu prevodovku. Celkovo bolo vyrobených viac ako 150 tisíc exemplárov.
