The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is the open-top version of the legendary 300 SL Gullwing and ranks among the most iconic sports cars of the 1950s. Mercedes-Benz introduced it in 1957 as a more modern and comfortable alternative to the famous gullwing coupe.
The Roadster retained the technical foundation of its predecessor but featured a modified tubular frame, classic doors, and an all-new rear axle. These modifications improved handling while eliminating some of the coupe’s shortcomings.
Under the hood is a 3.0-liter inline-six engine with mechanical fuel injection. The engine was fitted with a camshaft from earlier NSL racing versions, which added approximately 25 koní to the original engine’s output.

The Story of a Specific Specimen
This 300 SL Roadster was manufactured in 1958 and was originally ordered by King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan. The car was delivered to the king in London in October 1958. Hussein was a well-known car enthusiast and had previously owned and raced a 300 SL Gullwing.
The car later underwent extensive professional restoration and became part of the collection of former Formula 1 driver Skip Barber. To this day, it retains many of its original features and is considered one of the most beautiful examples of the 300 SL model.
