The BMW 507 is one of BMW’s most iconic models. The roadster was introduced in the mid-1950s as a luxury sports model designed mainly for the American market and was intended to compete with the Mercedes 300 SL.
The design was created by Albrecht von Goertz and is still one of the purest automotive lines ever. Typical are:
- long hood
- low silhouette
- minimalist chrome details
- elegant side vents
This particular RM Sotheby’s Series II piece particularly impresses with its elegant silver lacquer finish and very clean proportions. The interior looks luxurious yet sporty – exactly in the spirit of the GT cars of the 1950s. years.
Under the hood was a 3.2-liter aluminum V8 that produced about 150 horsepower and was mated to a 4-speed manual transmission.
Despite the beautiful design, the car was extremely expensive to produce and sold significantly worse than BMW expected. As a result, only around 252 were produced, making it one of the rarest classic BMWs made today.
The model was also made famous by celebrities including Elvis Presley, who owned one while serving in Germany.
