The Chevrolet Impala is a mid-size to large car produced from 1957 to 2020, on and off, in 10 generations. It was intended to be the successor to the Bel Air and Lumina. It was sold with rear-wheel drive and a front-mounted engine until 1996, and later with front-wheel drive. It was a popular flagship model among the company’s passenger cars and was one of the best-selling American cars in the United States.
When it was introduced, the car was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The car was available in several body styles and a wide range of engines during its years of production. The total number of examples produced is estimated at more than 16 million.
