The Porsche 904 is a sports car produced in Germany between 1964 and 1965 as the successor to the 718. It was sold as a 2-door coupe with rear-wheel drive and the engine located in the rear center. It was known to the public as the Carrera GTS rather than the internal development code, as Peugeot owned the rights to the X0Y format numbers. Under road traffic regulations, the car was roadworthy, allowing it to be driven not only on race tracks but also on public roads.
The car was used by the factory team in the World Sports Car Championship from 1964 to 1966. It was available with three versions of the flat-twin 2-litre engine namely a 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder. These were mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The power of the 4-cylinder version was around 200 hp (149 kW), which allowed it to reach speeds of up to 260 km/h (260 mph).
