The Mercedes-Benz W111 is a range of full-size luxury cars produced primarily in West Germany (Stuttgart) between 1959 and 1971 as a replacement for the W180. They were sold in 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe and convertible versions with rear-wheel drive and a front-mounted engine. In total, more than 370,000 examples were produced.

The 280 SE 3.5 was introduced in 1969 as the last model of this series and the first post-war Mercedes coupe with an engine capacity of more than 3 litres. The car was powered by a 200 hp (150 kW) 3.5-litre V8 engine, which allowed it to reach speeds of up to 210 km/h (210 mph) and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.5 s. In total, around 4,500 examples of the 2780 SE 3.5 were produced.
