The Lotus Esprit is a sports car produced in England (Hethel) between 1976 and 2004 as a replacement for the Europa. It was sold as a 2-door coupe with rear-wheel drive and the engine located in the rear center. Together with the Elise, it is one of the company’s longest-lived models.
The Esprit was one of the first almost straight, sharply curved designs by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. Its chassis was later modified for the DMC DeLorean. It was powered by several I4 and V8 engines of 2 to 3.5 litres, mated to a 5-speed and, in later models, 6-speed manual transmission. In total, more than 10,000 examples were produced.
