Lotus Elan is the name of two separate lines of cars produced by Lotus Cars. The first series of this sports car was produced in 1962-1975 and had rear-wheel drive, and the second series was produced in 1989-1995 with front-wheel drive. Both series had the engine mounted in the front.
The Lotus Elan +2 was launched in 1967 as a 2+2 coupe and was produced until 1975. It had a longer wheelbase and two small rear seats. Compared to the classic Elan, this version of the Elan was larger and considerably more luxurious, designed primarily for families with children. The car was powered by a 1.5-litre I4 engine mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox.
In 1968 a more luxurious version was released with the name +2S. This version was powered by a more powerful version of the I4 engine, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The engines output ranged from 108-126 hp (81-94 kW), allowing the car to reach speeds of 193 km/h (193 mph) and accelerate from 0 to 97 km/h (97 mph) in 7.9 seconds.
